THE AREA

Montazels village square

We recently overheard in a French restaurant (in the beautiful village of Lagrasse towards the coast) the Languedoc-Roussillon area being described by an Englishman 'as the last undiscovered area of France'.

If you are just looking for the sea and beaches, Montazels is not the place to base yourself. However, if you like to explore areas by car, bike, horse or on foot, it is ideal. In nearby Espéraza you have a Dinosaurs and a Hat museum. (The area was famous for its hat making).

Carcassonne (La Cité) can easily take up a whole day. Further to the south lays Andorra providing exceptional tax-free shopping in combination with its interesting villages and rugged scenery. The whole area around Montazels oozes contrasts and interest. The inland lakes & rivers provide the opportunity for boating, fishing, swimming & canoing. The Canal Du Midi cuts east to west.  For the winter months skiing at Les Angles is an hour and forty minutes away. So, there is plenty to see and do, and contacting the very active and excellently run local tourist offices will provide you with a wealth of information.
